Indulge and Nourish: A Health-Conscious Approach to Holiday Treats
/Ah, the holiday season—the time for delicious treats and festive flavours! The pull to veer off course from our healthy habits is completely understandable with the irresistible array of sweet and tasty treats all around us. But fear not, for there's a way to revel in the festive indulgences while still nurturing your body with goodness.
Instead of fixating on what to avoid, let's focus on what to include in our snacking and dining experiences. Part of enjoying the holidays is being able to treat yourself with foods that aren’t part of your normal routine; the key is moderation and making sure you’re eating enough healthy stuff in between the festivities.
To make sure your dinner on a party night doesn't consist of candy canes and shortbread (just to be clear, we wouldn't judge if it did! :), a good tip for holiday parties is to try and head straight to the fresh fruit and veggie platters—and take a nibble from the nut bowl—early on when you’re hungry, then sample the other fare when you’re not feeling ravenous. Getting enough protein and healthy fats (hello, hummus dip!) will help keep you feeling satiated and more inclined to make choices you’ll feel good about later. Having some fresh veg, fruit and nuts in your tummy before sampling the tarts and cookies will help your body get the fuel it needs while your spirit is getting the fun it deserves :)
Making your own sweet treats and being able to control the ingredients is a great solution if you can set aside the time. Any time you add some red fruit like pomegranate or raspberry to dark chocolate, it just looks festive. And any chocolate lover will enjoy handmade chocolate truffles, which can be loaded with healthy ingredients like matcha, seeds, nuts and more—plus you’re in control of the sweetener (dates are lovely). Roll in a little cacao powder or shredded coconut for a beautiful holiday treat! Another treat we love is raw, vegan Peppermint Patties. They're a dream come true for health-conscious holiday indulgers, featuring cashews for that protein punch and coconut oil for those essential healthy fats. Plus the refreshing hit of peppermint is essentially a breath mint—perfect for party mingling! Check out our recipe—it might just become your new seasonal go-to!
A simple tip worth reminding ourselves of is to drink plenty of water (sparkling with a dash of cranberry juice and lime is extra festive) to help avoid getting dehydrated from salty foods, and especially if drinking alcohol. It’s also a great time to experiment with holiday mocktails, featuring herbs like rosemary, fresh fruit (try pomegranate or blood orange) and a dash of bitters—experiment and enjoy!
When it comes to hot seasonal drinks—try to swap out the processed sugar for honey, and why not add a dash of coconut oil or sprinkle in some medicinal mushrooms into your hot cocoa? These natural, plant-based boosts not only elevate the taste but also contribute to your overall well-being. Herbal tea blends with seasonal flavours like cinnamon, peppermint, ginger and clove are a fantastic way to enjoy the tastes of the holidays without any sugar crash, and the added bonus is that many of them will aid digestion—something that’s super helpful this time of year!:)
The secret to a blissful holiday season isn't deprivation—it's about smart choices that blend pleasure with nourishment. So, as you embrace the festive spreads and delightful treats, remember to add a touch of goodness to each bite and sip. Cheers to a season of joy, wellness, and deliciously mindful indulgence!
