Spring really does feel like a great time for a reset. It's not surprising that the idea of spring cleaning has appeared in many cultures and religions stretching back thousands of years! Sometimes the process of deep cleaning and organising all our stuff naturally leads us to question: how much of this stuff do we really need? While you're rolling up your sleeves and moving stuff around to get into nooks and crannies, and pulling summer things out of your drawers and closets and getting winter things ready to be tucked away for a while, it's worth being thoughtful about what you're really making use of—and also about the most responsible way to re-home some of the things that are no longer playing a useful role in your life.
If you find yourself with a whole lot that you're ready to be rid of, a classic yard sale is always a great option for finding people who will treasure things that are no longer right for you. And the best part is, those people will come to you! A prominent ‘free’ sign will pretty much guarantee your clutter will be off to start a new life in no time :) That said, a bit of extra income aways comes in handy, or you could even do a little fundraiser and donate your proceeds to a community organization. If you have a handy table or two for displaying your merchandise that's great, but even a blanket or sheet spread on the lawn will do, so the whole process can be really simple. This can also be a really nice way to get to know a few neighbours! If you don’t have easy access to the right outdoor space, or just have a handful of key 'pieces' you're ready to let go of—and you have the time to take a few photos and write some brief descriptions—there are free listing options like Facebook Marketplace. Or, if you have some really great stuff on your hands and a bit more time, you could always start a little Etsy shop or eBay account.
But if you don't have the time or inclination to manage the 're-homing' process on your own, there are tons of people who will be really happy to do that for you, from charity-run thrift stores to small, independent local vintage shops. Often just a few calls and quick drop off can be all that's standing between you and a noticeably de-cluttered home. No matter the approach you take, it can really be a win-win feeling to have more space and organization in your own life, while knowing that you've helped someone else find something they need and/or love without using more resources from our planet.
