Meet The Makers Mini Interview: Happy Pops
/Happy Pops Mini Interview
Our latest maker hails from across the country! We’re really happy we got a chance to catch up with Toronto-based Leila Keshavjee, founder of Happy Pops, a fabulously flavourful line of all natural popsicles—which she created by drawing on her background in athletics and kinesiology, as well as on her cultural heritage. We love Happy Pops because they really do live up to their name and definitely put a smile on the face of everyone who tries them! Leila’s journey has taken her from idea, to Dragon’s Den, to national distribution. We’re proud to be the first BC grocer to have stocked Happy Pops, and we’re so pleased Lelia found some time in her super busy, small independent business owner’s schedule to answer our Mini Interview questions.
Share your story with us in a 150 words or less.
I started Happy Pops in 2016 after graduating with a degree in kinesiology from the University of Toronto. Through my education, I learned that there are many names for sugar and it is often difficult to find products with ingredients you can recognize. As an athlete and coach, I wanted to create a unique line of ice pops suitable for everyone to enjoy anytime.
I drew on my South Asian heritage and travels, as well as my family’s experience in the food industry to come up with a flavour line-up that can’t be found anywhere else. From Passion Fruit and Lemon Mint to Mango and Strawberry, Happy Pops is a treat that appeals to Canada’s diverse tastes. The ice pops are handcrafted in small batches without artificial ingredients.
Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?
I was on Dragons’ Den and I would say after that I realized this was something I really wanted to build. I didn’t take the deal in the end, though, because it was very early in the business!
Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?
My favourite flavour varies. On a hot day, I love anything citrus – Lemon Mint or Passion Fruit. I also love using the Strawberry pops to make a drink.
What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?
I love seeing people enjoy Happy Pops. It’s really special when people tag us on social media or leave us a review. It’s the best thing after a long day and it fires me up to keep going.
What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?
I love the food scene in Toronto and so I’m happy restaurants are finally open here. I love trying new things and there are so many great places in the city.
Describe your ideal Sunday morning, including your breakfast.
My ideal Sunday morning is an early bike ride with friends and an avocado toast with poached eggs. Sometimes I like to enjoy some buttermilk chocolate chip pancakes
What are your personal top three tips for feeling awesome?
Do what you love.
Celebrate the small wins.
Make time for yourself.
