This mother and daughter duo know that good food is made even better with good spices! It all started when Mariam Anvarali Nichols and her mother Masooma Anvaral became fed up with the additives in many store-bought spice mixes, so they decided to create their own spice blend based on a generations-old family recipe. They started selling it at their local Farmers Market and from there From the Earth Spices was born! Locally roasted and blended in Victoria, their spice blends have quickly become a culinary staple.

All the spice blends are organic, gluten-free and vegan and have step-by-step instructions on how to make a delicious meal right on the package! Unique offerings like Kheer Rice Pudding (with rose petals!) and the wildly popular Butter Chicken (with cashews!) are sure to become some of your new favourites. We’re really grateful Mariam and Masooma found some time to answer our Meet The Maker interview questions this month.

Share your story with us in 150 words or less. 

From the Earth is a mother-daughter owned business created with the love and passion for authentic, healthy and delicious South Asian dishes. Our spice blends are derived from several generations of family recipes, each with its own unique history and flavour. We launched From the Earth in 2018 with just our Curry Powder and have since expanded to over 7 blends. We are passionate and enthusiastic about creating and sharing food for everyone to enjoy and create their own memories.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

The moment it really sank in for us was when we had our first product, the Curry Powder, ready to sell and saw it in the first retail store. As we started to get calls from stores who wanted to stock our products, the excitement and gratitude started to sink in. 

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?

Our personal favourite is definitely the Kheer - Rice Pudding. There is nothing like it in the marketplace. From its authentic flavour, to clean ingredients, ease of preparation and absolutely delicious taste, the Kheer is a winner!! 

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?

Victoria is like living in a postcard; the scenery is breathtaking all year round and you feel like a tourist in your own city.

Describe your ideal Sunday morning, including your breakfast.

Our ideal Sunday morning is to wake up at sunrise, have a bowl of oats with a tbsp of our Kheer (so good!), go out for a walk in the fresh air and ground at the beach in the warm sunshine. 

 What are your personal top three tips for feeling amazing?

1. Watch the sunrise 

2. Plan and eat healthy foods you enjoy 

3. Most importantly laugh a lot!
