The fabulous Turmeric Elixirs made by Salt Spring Island's own Moonshine Mamas have officially reached cult status on the West Coast. And it's been so exciting to watch the rest of Canada fall in love with them too! These local ladies are such a joy to have doing Pomme Demos at our events that they're as popular as their products. We thought it would be fantastic to help you get to know a little bit more about them so we’re thrilled to share this mini interview with founder Mel. Our favourite quote: "We do all our best dancing in the kitchen..."

Here in our kitchen on a tiny island in the Pacific, we select organic turmerics, lemons, gingers and honeys and press them into a delicious, nourishing, straight-from-a-shot-glass or pour-over-anything fuel for your body and soul. Moonshine Mama’s, a family business since 2013 producing turmeric based elixirs, was created after a health crisis that left its owner searching for wellness and a tasty way to incorporate those immune boosting ingredients into her diet.

It grew through the local farmers market and into multiple kitchens in both BC and Ontario. Moonshine Mama’s is shaped by its mission to start with ingredients in their natural and whole form, have very little impact on the planet, and maintain a healthy and happy work environment for it’s team members. Moonshine Mama’s strives to make the best handcrafted product possible using non gmo, fair trade and organic produce, changing lives from the very first sip.

Getting from an idea to a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

I guess it really started to sink in when people actually started stopping by our market tent in the Saturday Market and actually purchase a bottle! That was a magical time of getting positive feedback from people from all over and definitely fuelled our faith that we could make a living at making this stuff.

Out of all your products, which in your personal favourite and why?

Right now my favourite is the Turmeric Lime Elixir. It is so cooling in the heat and super hydrating as it is jammed packed with electrolytes. I like to drink it straight up poured over ice.

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

The motivation is to keep our customers happy by continually producing the best product possible and keep all of our 20 team member mamas busy and working happily in our cute factory!

What’s your favourite thing about the town or city you live in?

I love living on Salt Spring Island because of the quaintness of island life. Being close to nature and a part of a thriving small community feels really right for myself and raising a family.

Describe your ideal Sunday morning, including your breakfast.

My ideal Sunday morning would consist of having no agenda but sleeping in, cuddling with the family, drinking turmeric elixir kombucha mimosas while we prepare a healthy brunch consisting of loads of organic vegetables and kitchen dance party vibes. We do all our best dancing in the kitchen...

What are your personal top three tips for feeling awesome?

In a nutshell:

1. Sleep well.
2. Drink your elixir and eat well.
3. Laugh lots... enjoy life. It is precious and should be taken lightly. The relationships and moments spent engaging with friends and family is what will carry and motivate you through life.
